We have about 20 people. Considering you'll need about 5 to man even the smallest of ships, we'd be lucky to get 1 small one.

Me being dutch I would vote for several smaller ships. (But lets start with one of course) Huge ships look cool, but were in historic battles often very impractical. The spanish and french used to have awesome ships, but the Anglo-Dutch fleets would just load a few cannons on some small, agile ships and blast them to bits while avoiding getting shot themselves.

A large ship is an easy target for the Pirates, since they will have bigger ones. Thus, smaller would be.. Well, I vote for smaller and faster over bigger and nasty-er.

Hm pirates will probably have the cheaper ships and fit them as good as possible for as little money as they can manage, for when they get shot while raiding they wont be in a huge financial problems, unable to buy new stuff, its how it goes in EVE and I expect also how it will go in DF
